Apples Trophy 2012

DSC00713aSunday 13th May 2012 saw Coalhouse Fort deliver another day of decent sailing weather and a wind in the right direction to give good racing for ‘A’ Class boats.

The course set was a windward/leeward one with a spreader at the windward end, a start some way upstream of the leeward mark and the finish between the two spreaders at the windward end.

The entry was down a bit on last year perhaps another sign of the cost of travelling. However most of the stalwarts were there plus a newcomer in the shape of Agustin Moreno sailing Graham Bantock’s Sword.DSC00712a

Race 1 saw Dave Andrews get away to a good start but then run into a dull patch so he was overtaken before reaching the first mark. After that there were many changes of leader until Colin Trower got a good lead after rounding the leeward mark for the last time. He was not caught and so took the first race to be followed home by Trevor Binks, Agustin Moreno and Dave.

That more or less set the pattern for following races with someone getting away and then often losing the lead. None of this stopped Colin winning the first 3 races, though Dave was never far behind. Dave took Races 4, 5 and 8 while Colin won the rest.

It was now clear that these two would fight it out for the title! That’s not to say that others did not shine at times but none managed to wind a race all day!

At lunch after Race 8 Colin was 1 point ahead of Dave. During the afternoon session they won all the races between them and swapped the overall lead.

Race 16 meant that the 3rd discard kicked and once again there was DSC00719aonly a point between them for the final race. This proved a bit of a disappointment for Dave as he finished 4th while Colin won and so won the Apples Trophy.

There were two boats from the Eastern District and up to lunch time there was not much between them. However in the afternoon Agustin edged ahead and Vernon’s fate was sealed when he withdrew from the last two races. So the Eastern District A Class Champion for 2012 is Augustin Moreno.

There were a few incidents but all penalties were taken on the water to give the Race Committee a relaxed day.

News of the event had spread to the Southend Model Boat Club who have been sailing old Marbleheads for a while and came to see how we do things.

With a posse of about a dozen we were almost outnumbered!

Such is their enthusiasm to learn that they stayed all day and while there asked a lot of questions.

At the moment they are unlikely to join the MYA but it is something that may occur in the future.
