The Norwich MYC held its annual Whitlingham Cup for Radio Marbleheads at Whitlingham Broad on Sunday 10th March.
Despite it being a successful event last year, entries were lower than expected resulting in only seven boats attending the event.
As forecast there was a strong easterly wind in wintry conditions with snow, sleet and rain occurring throughout the day.
The Race Officer, Peter Sutton, set a good triangle and sausage course and went to the trouble of readjusting the start line so that the fleet always had a good beat to the windward mark.
From the start it was obvious that the main contenders for the even would be Graham Bantock, Roy Stevens and Martin Crysell. Unfortunately newcomer Nick Eastwood, and fellow competitor Mick Howard had a clash with their crystals which could not be resolved, so they each had to take turns to race. Eventually Mick Howard, very graciously stepped down and allowed Nick Eastwood to race so he could gain experience in racing his boat.
After lunch the wind increased even more and some spectacular capsizes took place. By 2:30pm, and after completing 15 races, Peter Sutton gave the competitors a well received option to call it a day, needless to say all were in agreement.
Councillor Bob McClenning, Chairman of the South Norfolk Council, and his wife Patricia very kindly attended the event and Councillor McClenning agreed to present the prizes.
As expected Graham Bantock retained the trophy, for the third year, and Roy Stevens and Martin Crysell came second and third, separated by just two points.
Many thanks to Pete Sutton for giving up his time as Race Officer for the event, and to the club members Robert Owen, Chris Yallop, Ronnie Vertigan and Robert Fawbert who kindly volunteered their time to assist at the event. Finally many thanks to all competitors, volunteers and participants who contributed towards a most successful event…..despite the elements !!!!
