Norwich MYC held their annual Yare Cup at Whitlingham on Sunday 26th May 2013. A total of 14 Skippers had entered the event, but unfortunately due to various reasons only 9 made it to the start line. Sympathy must go out to Terry Burton who had entered the event, only to trip over at Filby the week before which resulted in breaking a couple of ribs. Hopefully we will see him back on the water soon.
The 9 Competitors from 4 different Clubs assembled at 9. 30am to find almost perfect sailing conditions, with a 10 knot NW breeze and pleasant sunny conditions.
Race Officer Vinnie Zammit set a Triangular and sausage course and from the start it became apparent that the wind direction was going to vary from NE to N and back again. This resulted in 6 slight course changes throughout the day. However the competitors accepted the changes well and it ensured that all the races started with a beat to windward.
By Lunchtime it became obvious that Pete Sutton was well in contention with 6 wins. Followed by Alf Reynolds winning 2 and Rick Buxton winning 1.
After Lunch the wind had increased to over 15 Knots in the gusts and there was talk of changing down to No 2 rigs. This never happened and some entertaining down wind runs took place much to the amusement of the casual on looking public.
The afternoon session was again dominated by Peter with another 8 wins and secured himself 1st place overall. Tom Wilkinson, with some good sailing took the other 2. Rick continued to sail steadily which helped him to take 2nd place overall. Mention must go to Chris Pearson, although not winning any races his consistency placed him 3rd overall.
For you that are wondering, yes, Alf Reynolds did try 3 Port flyers and got away with 2.
I would like to congratulate all the competitors for their sportsman like attitude throughout the event. Also a special thanks to those members of the NMYC for giving up their time to help run the event.
