Harwich & Dovercourt Model Boat Club hosted the Murrison Cup for IOM Boats on Sunday 6th October 2013
A fickle south westerly wind greeted the nine skippers who came to the line for the first race. Graham Bartholomew read the shifts well to beat fellow clubman Phil Playle to the line in a race which was to set the pattern for the day with boats losing and others gaining as the wind varied through several directions on each of the three beats set by Race Officer Dave Kerridge. The next four races saw four different winners, Malcolm Harris, Graham Bartholomew, Jon Alexander and Vernon Appleton. In the last race before lunch Phil Playle registered his first win. Lunch saw three skippers, Jon, Vernon and Phil tied on 15pts with Graham and Malcolm on 18pts. The afternoon racing was punctuated by several course changes which resulted in only six more heats being sailed. In this session Phil was the more consistent and his win in the final race of the day saw him pip Graham by three points to win the Trophy.
Racing throughout the fleet was always very competitive and although not having the best of days Vicki Mills, Alf Reynolds and John Richmond showed good resilience when caught on the wrong side of things when in promising positions in early stages of races. Richard Bowman-Daniels, a newcomer to our sport, gave notice that he too will become a force to be reckoned with in the future, making some good starts but losing out downwind.
Despite the continued wind fluctuations and course changes as a result, all the skippers deserve praise for their patience and making some very keen observers from the host club redundant by responding to the first call and completing penalties promptly.
At the Presentation Phil thanked his fellow skippers and the host club and its officials for a pleasant day’s racing in difficult conditions.
