RM Ranking, Games 2 & Presidents Cup

Saturday 29th March 2014 saw the first Marblehead Ranking event of the year at Norwich MYC with 24 boats and some 12 different designs taking to the water.

The weather was almost perfect with a nip in the air and a brisk easterly wind which resulted in most skippers opting to go for their top suite.

Wind direction allowed Race Officer Vinnie Zammit and his teamRM Ranking (1) to set a windward, leaward course straight up and down the lake which resulted in skippers having to really think about which course to take and made for some very close racing.

It was decided to use the HMS Schedule B system of scoring and the fleet was split into 2 seeding fleets.

From the start it became apparent that Brad Gibson sailing his Grunge, was going to be difficult to beat, winning 4 of the 5 races before the lunch break. Graham Bantock, Peter Stollery and Darin Ballington were left to fight it out for the next 3 places, with Peter just keeping his nose out in front of the other two.

After lunch the wind picked up slightly, with some sailors opting to change to a smaller rig. This however did not change the sequence of events with Brad once again winning 4 races, placing him first overall. Peter then came into his own, winning one and being placed 2nd in another three, claiming second overall, Darin continued to sail consistently which resulted in him being placed third overall.

Unfortunately Graham started to have some technical hitches with his boat which put him out of the running. Which goes to show us mere mortals, that even the best have problems.

Mention must be made of our furthest travelled skippers Nigel Winkley from Germany and Henning Faas from Austria who both tell me that they had a great time and had some good results.

RM Ranking (1a)NMYC President Peter Montague Kindly agreed to present the Presidents Cup and prizes to the winning skippers.

Saturday evening the fleet adjourned to the Kings Head Inn at Acle for a relaxing evening with a Buffet and Beer. But not too much as tomorrow is another day.
