Racing Rules Seminar

Some 27 Eastern District MYA members from 7 different clubs, attended a Racing Rules Seminar at the Dabchicks Sailing Club, West Mersea, on Thursday 17th July 2014. Apart from parking, the venue was excellent and the catering was very good with coffee and soft drinks available throughout the day, with a bar at lunchtime for those that wished to have a drink.

Peter Fitt the RYARulesSeminar1 Eastern Regional Rules Advisor spent the morning session explaining in some detail using animated slides, the basic definitions regarding Keeping Clear, Overlaps, Starboard and Port and Leeward and Windward. He then went on to demonstrate, again using slides, Rules 10 through 13 of Section A and Rules 14 through 17 of Section B. A number of members asked questions which were answered in a very confident and clear manner enabling the audience to clarify any points that they had previously been unsure about.

RulesSeminar3After a lunch break in the afternoon session, Peter went on to cover what most people consider to be the most controversial rules, namely Rules 18 through 21. This was followed by a brief discussion on Appendix E and ended with a number of ISAF cases to demonstrate some of the rules that had been covered earlier.

Finally, the floor was thrown open for members to ask specific questions about incidents that had experienced and Peter using, magnetic models, was able to clarify any issues that were raised.

Some comments that have since been received are:

“I thought the day was a great success as did everyone I spoke to. A1 venue, A1 food and drink and the presenter was very quietly confident and gave me confidents in what he said. Great day, Thank you!”

“A big thank you for an excellent day. We all really enjoyed Peter’s presentation. It is nice to listen to someone who really knows  his subject. Only one complaint, which is not your fault. That is, wish we had more there, they might have learnt something. We that were present certainly did!”

“Excellent presentation, shows value of a top class, knowledgeable presenter”

“Best presentation I have been on”. “Better than expected”. “Need more of the same”.

Our thanks to Peter Fitt, RYA Eastern Regional Rules Advisor, Dabchicks Sailing Club.
