Coalhouse Fort MBC hosted the Thames Cup and Round 5 of the Eastern District IOM Championship series on Sunday 21st September 2014. The day started off as a relatively warm sunny day with a good North North West wind. However as the day went on the wind veered round to a more northerly direction with some gusts which caused some of the skippers some problems. Whilst several skippers changed down to second suit after the first race a lot of the skippers stayed on top suit. As the wind strength varies some skippers opted to change up and down whilst others remained on their original choice.
The course was two triangles as shown with a minor change later in the day only to the first two marks, basically moving to the two windward marks from 9 and 8 out to 1 and 9.
With 15 skippers initially entered and two failing to participate the fleet was reduced to thirteen and so it was decided to run one fleet. However, this was reduced further to 12 throughout the morning due to Glen Meekcoms having problems with his receiver – when he managed to repair this he had some good races after lunch.
The day was dominated by Trevor Binks from Eastbourne who had some very good races with local skipper Colin Goodman, who was really the only skipper who appeared to be capable of beating Trevor, although Barry Raven of Chelmsford also managed a win.
The front of the fleet was basically dominated by five skippers, namely, Trevor Binks; Colin Goodman; Barry Raven and Vernon Appleton with one or two others having the occasional foray into the top four. In the end Trevor Binks was the clear winner with Colin Goodman second and Barry Raven third – congratulations to all three.
All skippers are to be complimented on their behaviour, as all protests were settled on the water, with most penalty turns being started before the protest was called.
