Murrison Cup 2014

The briefing was preceded by a minute’s silence in memory of Patricia Playle, the wife of Phil, who had many friends in our sailing circle, especially amongst those who were visiting our club for the day’s racing
David Kerridge the OOD and Jon Alexander his assistant were greeted with the conditions we all dislike at Dovercourt – a Northerly wind and too little of it! After a brief delay the Seeding Races were completed with the expected front runners well to the fore. Indeed the pattern was quickly set with Graham Bartholomew and Colin Goodman each winning two of the first four races whilst Vicky Mills and Malcolm Harris were very closely matched in the early battle for the third spot. Racing was very close and all skippers made the A heat at some stage but only Barry Jarvis and John Richmond were able to break into the top four at the expense of Malcolm or Vicky as Colin and Graham continued to dominate the top two spots. Whilst local skipper Robin Bloyce was it seems, unable to get a break, seesawing between each heat.
Lower down the fleet, relative newcomers to Open Events and those trialling new boats to them, were also enjoying some close races as the final results show. The courses set saw quite a few people including the official team getting quite a bit of extra exercise. Late in the day the wind decided to swing through 180 degrees causing a slight delay to proceedings. The real drama came with the positions tight at the very top, when it took a further 90 degree swing before the A heat was due to start for the last race with the time running out. Quick action saw the fleet away with Colin and Graham amongst the leaders but Vicky was able to at last break the monopoly of the visitors with a deserved win with Graham just edging out Colin to win the Day.
The Fleet was well observed by the non -sailing skippers plus the Race Committee and all incidents were resolved without the need for protests.
At the Prize Giving Graham, who was never out of the first two, thanked the Race Committee for providing good courses under very challenging conditions and all the skippers for a good days sailing.
