Corden Cup & EDCS 4

Harwich & Dovercourt MYC hosted the Corden Cup and Round 4 of the Eastern District IOM Championship Series on Sunday 2nd August at their Dovercourt Seafront venue. Light variable winds from the South greeted the Race team and the 23 skippers from seven clubs of the original entry of 27 when they arrived at the lake. The host club had already decided that a three heat day was inevitable under these forecast conditions and the Seeding Races followed quickly after OOD Nigel Gilson’s briefing.

With the holder of the trophy Colin Goodman unable to defend it, the top seeds Graham Bantock, Graham Bartholomew and Mark Dennis were successful in their respective heats. These three continued to dominate proceedings throughout the day until the Fifth race when Vinnie Zammit was successful after starting in the C heat.File 03-08-2015 15 22 12

The conditions made for short beats and the expected close quarters rounding at the first mark with observers having to call infringements on a regular basis. Most calls were acknowledged and the required turns done. There were some unresolved issues which were dealt with off the water, to most skippers’ satisfaction, including a formal protest which saw valuable sailing time lost.

Racing was keen throughout the fleet with the heat boards showing considerable change from race to race within the event .

File 03-08-2015 15 21 48In the end Graham Bartholomew was just able hold on to the overall lead from Graham Bantock who finished with two first places in the last two races, whilst the leader of the Series Mark Dennis was a comfortable third.

The Chelmsford Club had a very successful day with three in the first six, whilst N.Ennion who was 5th was the only home skipper to feature in the top 10.

All skippers and Race team appreciated the difficulties faced by one another at the end, but with 21 races completed most went home very tired indeed!
