The Annual Icicle Trophy, was hosted by Coalhouse Fort MBC on Sunday 6th December 2016. After an extremely windy night, Sunday started with a very light drizzle and winds of between 35 – 40 mph gusting up to 46 mph. The wind direction was good primarily from the SSW, and remained so for most of the day.
As a consequence the Race Officers decided to run the event as two heats and the course was two roundings of a windward/leeward course, with a spreader mark at the windward mark for the first rounding, at the southern end of the lake. With the high winds, everybody started on No.3 sails all morning with some close racing amongst the top skippers.
After four races and one discard, Mark Dennis was leading with 4 points followed by John Cleave on 5 points and Colin Goodman third on 6 points and Andy Brown on 7 points.
During the lunch break, with the wind strength dropping to about 20 mph but gusting up to 30 mph, Alf Reynolds changed up to No.2 sails and romped away with the ‘B’ heat taking him into the ‘A’ heat for the first time. Having watched Alf cope with the conditions with no major mishap, there was a rush by the ‘A’ heat skippers to all change up to No.2 sails also. From this point, whilst Mark Dennis continued to maintain his consistency, Colin Goodman made some significant improvement taking the next three wins. Unfortunately, John Cleave had some bad results leaving him still in third but out of contention for the top two places. Meanwhile Barry Raven started to show some improvement and was challenging for third place along with Phil Playle.
With the last race coming up, a couple of ‘B’ heat skippers decided to try No. 1 sails because the wind had appeared to drop off a little bit more and appeared to cope reasonably well. This prompted several ‘A’ Heat skippers including Mark Dennis and Barry Raven to also change up, whilst Colin Goodman and John Cleave stayed on No.2. This created a very interesting scenario, as Colin was leading Mark by two points and so the last race of the day was going to be the decider.
Colin made a good start and led the heat to the first mark, and whilst Mark and Barry started to catch him on the run, Colin was able to maintain his lead. He then went on to increase his lead on the beat, but again, Barry and Mark started to catch Colin on the run, with Barry getting very close to passing him. As they turned at the last leeward mark, Colin managed to maintain the lead and retain it to the finish, with Mark coming second and Barry third. As a consequence, Colin Goodman was the overall winner on 7 points, with Mark Dennis second on 10 points. Had Barry been able to win or at least stay ahead of Mark he would have taken third, but as it was John Cleave took third based on count back.

Despite the extremely windy conditions, there were very few collisions and all incidents were resolved on the water. Our thanks to all the skippers for an excellent days racing.
