Apples Trophy & PRACC 5

On Sunday 12th June Coalhouse Fort MBC hosted the Apples Trophy and Round 5 of the PRACC series for ‘A’ Class Boats. There was a disappointing turn out of only seven boats for the event, but nevertheless there was some good racing throughout the day.2016-06-12 17.38.45

On arriving at the lake, it was overcast but dry with a strong breeze primarily from the south, which allowed Race Officer, Geoff Appleton, to set a large triangle and sausage course covering almost 3/4 of the length of the lake. This enabled skippers who had made a poor start to make up ground.

Very soon after the first race, it started to rain, which continued off and on throughout the 2016-06-12 17.40.51morning, although this did not appear to dampen the spirits of the skippers. It soon became very apparent that Vernon Appleton was going to make use of his local knowledge and dominate the event. In one race he even started last across the line but by the first mark was leading, such was his ability to read the wind and use the course to his advantage. Bob Connor and Phil Holliday did their best to keep up with Vernon, but ultimately he was able to counter their moves, apart from race 12, when Bob managed to take a win, with Richard Aucott second and Roger Dunklin, who had struggled earlier on taking third.

After taking a lunch break, the wind seemed to drop away, such that the Race Officers considered a change of course, but it quickly built up again and so the course remained the same throughout the day. After lunch it brightened up and the sun begin to shine, with Bob and Phil continuing to battle for second and third places, with Richard and Roger making occasional forays.

With very few incidents, all the skippers behaved impeccably and did their turns when protested and so our thanks to all of them for making it a great day. Also, thanks to the race team consisting of Geoff Appleton, Malcolm Schaffer and John Newton, the event ran smoothly without any issues.

Vernon Appleton was the clear winner on 12 points, followed by Bob Connor on 30 points and Phil Holliday third on 34 points.
