Thames Cup & EDCS 5

Sunday 25th September saw the Thames Cup and Round 5 of the Eastern District IOM Championship Series take place at Coalhouse Fort. Whilst rain and strong winds were predicted for the day, apart from a few spots early on it was a very pleasant day eventually with plenty of sun. However, the wind was another matter being initially from the WSW then veering to the W and then backing to the SW caused the Race team some headaches in setting a suitable course. The wind coming from the W it was over the Fort, and changing in strength did cause some problems for skippers.

Initially most skippers apart from John Richmond who started on No. 2, begin the day onIMG_9665 No. 1 sails, but then Vinnie Zammit suffered a broken jib boom so he also reverted to No.2 sails. The wind seemed to drop in strength so John changed up to No. 1 sails at which point the wind started to strengthen and back to more SW, such that by lunchtime almost everybody changed down to No. 2 sails.

IMG_9671Whilst 15 skippers initially signed in, Mark Dennis arrived minus his toolbox which contained his transmitter, causing him to have to rush home and so miss the first 5 races. However, he soon made up for this by challenging for the lead on numerous occasions subsequently. In the meantime, Colin Goodman was using all his skills to win thirteen of the seventeen races with three seconds and a third. His closest rival until Mark arrived was Vernon Appleton, with Graham Bartholomew putting in a challenge. Vernon made a good start to the day but then seemed to have a few wobbles whichIMG_9696 allowed Graham to put him under pressure towards the end of the day such that they both finished on the same points, but Vernon taking second place based on count back. Had Mark not missed the first five races, he would surely have been up there in the running for one of the top places.

Congratulations to everybody who participated on their behaviour with all issues settled on the water, thereby enabling everybody to have an enjoyable day.
