17 competitors representing 5 clubs assembled at Whitlingham Broad to take part in the Yare cup.
PRO Vinnie Zammit decided that to maximize the amount of sailing time due to winter hours the competitors would sail in 1 fleet.
In good conditions, with an 11 knot NW breeze the fleet set off on a testing course with the lead changing several times during the race. This was to be the pattern of the day. In fact 5 different skippers had line honours throughout the day. (Duncan Ellis, Tony Garner, and Mark Holt, with 3 each. Mike Kemp with 2 and Pete Sutton with 1).
At lunchtime Duncan Ellis had established a good lead through consistent sailing with 14 points followed by Pete Sutton with 25 and Mark Holt on 29.
After lunch the wind had veered to a more Northerly direction and the course had to be altered giving a shorter beat to the windward mark. This resulted in more boats arriving at the mark together and a few collisions ensued. However, skippers did stick to the rules and those that needed to carried out their penalty turns.
With the wind dropping and the light fading fast by just after 3pm, the PRO decided to call it a day as boat No’s were becoming difficult to make out.
Duncan Ellis and Pete Sutton managed to hang on to their first and second placings and although not winning a race Dave Allinson through consistent sailing moved up to third place.
Well done all competitors for taking part in a fair and good humoured! Event
