Norfolk Trophy & EDCS 5

Sadly there were only eleven entries for the Norfolk Trophy and Round 5 of the Eastern District IOM Championship Series, this year with only one – Alf Reynolds – coming from outside the county. However this didn’t stop those present from enjoying a very good days racing in a fresh breeze from the south west.

Race officer, Terry Burton, set a course with a mark to port of the windward mark which served as one of the finishing marks and to separate the incoming boats from those heading to the wing mark or back to the leeward gate. Tony Garner was his assistant and scorer.

Things were made interesting before the start when Eric’s boat decided to drop its fin and ballast about 50 yards off shore. Fortunately fellow club member Keith came to the rescue by lending him a boat for the day.

The racing was good in spite of the variable and shifting breeze and conducted in the right spirit with penalties being taken as required, usually without having to be called. Mark Holt showed his ability to deal well with the tricky conditions by running out as a fairly comfortable winner. John Hanton was second and only one point behind was Vinnie Zammit in third place. The full results are shown below. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Terry and Tony for taking charge on the day and all those sailors who took part for their support.

Eastern District Committee

As we come to the end of the year, we need to start thinking about the Eastern District AGM which will be in early November as usual, venue and agenda to be advise by the end of this month.

However, there is an issue regarding the District Committee that needs to be considered now, so that we do not find ourselves floundering at the AGM.

Currently the Eastern District consists of the following:

Chairman – Vernon Appleton (Coalhouse Fort RYC)

Vice Chairman – Vacant

Secretary – Malcolm Schaffer (Coalhouse Fort RYC)

Senior Measurer/Racing Secretary – Henry Farley (Lee Valley)

District Councillor – Geoff Appleton (Coalhouse Fort)

Web master – John Newton (Coalhouse Fort)

As you can see, not only are the members all based in the south of the district, but four out of the six are based in one club, which can not be regarded as a healthy situation and should not be continued.

It is our understanding that Vernon Appleton and Geoff Appleton intend to stand down at the AGM and as such at least three vacancies will exist. It has also been suggested that perhaps Henry Farley, who has been in position since forever, would like to reduce his workload.

So, this is a plea for members to think about stepping up to the mark, since this is your District and it needs your support. Without people in position, the District, which is currently regarded as one of the better ones in the MYA, will start to suffer and our reputation will be severely diminished.

If you would like to be considered for any of the above positions, please feel free to contact either your Club Secretary or Malcolm Schaffer (malcolm_schaffer@hotmail.com)

Please note, the Lifeboat Pennant and round 4 of the Eastern District IOM Championship series event will not take place due to circumstances beyond Lee Valley’s control.

Lifeboat Pennant 2017

The weed season has finally reached Lee Valley’s lake at Clayton Hill. They now have clumps of growing weed that are tall enough to stop an IOM in its tracks in addition to the floating stuff that the birds bring to the surface.

Though some sort of sailing is possible the results really are a lottery and not fit for a District IOM Championship event. So regretfully they have decided to cancel the event.

The club will endeavour to sail on the day and if anyone fancies a day at the lottery, they will be pleased to see you! They gather in the car park at about 10:00am and sail until 3:00pm.
